Resume Writing

As they say, the first impression goes a long way. The resume, or curriculum vitae (CV), is a summary of relevant experience and education, used for obtaining a job interview. Often it is the first item that recruiters encounter regarding the job seeker, and therefore a substantial amount of importance is ascribed to it.

In spite of the importance that is attached to it, it is common experience of recruiters that they receive resumes that are badly written and do not communicate to them what the applicant is trying to say. The increase in number of applicants for a job has resulted in recruiters spending lesser time than usual on each resume. This further establishes the need to write good and readable resumes that capture the attention of the recruiter.

Edu-Next Ventures offers a rigourous resume making programme to build the best of breed resumes to help students articulate their strengths and achievements better. The aim of this module is to finalize the resume of the student by documenting strengths, weaknesses, aspirations and experience. The resume process involves the steps outlined below:

Content identification

The first step to write a good resume is to have an inventory of all past experiences and achievements. Candidates generally ignore the importance of personal achievements and strengths. The takeaway of this sub- module is to put their total personality on paper. We achieve this by a twofold strategy:

  • Set of headings that will give direction to the thought process
  • Communicate with the student on how outsiders perceive their resume

Introspection

Apart from the buckets/ topics under which students should fill their resume, we also facilitate the process of content identification by asking questions on behavior, accomplishments, goals, inter-personal skills, experience etc. These questions, apart from content identification, also require that students introspect to define/ articulate aspirations, strengths and past experiences.

Articulation

While writing the right content is very critical, it is equally important to present these points using right words as this is critical to catch the attention of the potential employer. It is important to highlight the correct words so that the strengths and personality of the student are conveyed to the recruiter.

Presentation

The icing on the cake is to make the resume readable. The resume has to be made easy-on-eye format and structure are critical. The choice of font, line spacing and layout of the resume are critical to catch the attention of the recruiter.
Once these are complete, the resume will be market-ready.
